We are starting a new series with the help of Katherine Thompson from IPV Educators.  It was born out of a passion for advocating for survivors of interpersonal violence.  We are glad to learn from Katherine  and the first discussion is regarding human trafficking.
For the first half of our human trafficking discussion we will talk primarily of the background and ways to help identify these patients.  Listen to the podcast for full details.

What is human trafficking?
Human trafficking is the trade of humans for the purpose of forced labor, sexual slavery, or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker or others.

Quick statistics:
  • 600,000 people are trafficked each year
  • Half of them are children
  • Almost 80% of those trafficked are females
  • Approximately 88% saw a medical professional while they were trafficked

Common methods and aspects of trafficking:
  • Human trafficking often thought of by path of travel or urban centers
  • Four biggest states for at least sex trafficking are California, Nevada, Texas, and New York
  • Borders, highways, ports, and other high transport  areas are common locations for trafficking
  • Most common form of transportation during trafficking is by car

Presentations can be rather complex:
  • Frequent UTIs, STIs, or pelvic infections
  • Often have someone with them that is very protective
  • They are high-risk in some way

Frequent high-risk factors:
  • Immigration status is questionable (brought here illegally or via a forced marriage)
  • Have limited to know knowledge of the language
  • May not even know what country or state they are currently in
  • Frequently there is a dependence to drugs, alcohol, or other substances
  • Emotional manipulation or threats often used
